Frequently Asked Questions
General Information for All Students
I don’t meet the prerequisite. How to I get a waiver?
Students who meet the prerequisites will be permitted to register in courses prior to those that do not meet either the course or programme requirements as outlined in the Undergraduate Calendar.
See the policy for waivers and permissions.
Solar tells me a class is full. Can I still obtain a seat from the Department or by contacting the instructor?
Once a class is full, no students may enroll in the course. No waiting lists are maintained, however, you may wish to submit a petition for consideration. Petitions will be reviewed by the Department in August. Otherwise, it is advised that you continue to check on Solar until the end of the “drop and add period” in case a seat opens up.
I want to discuss my degree audit. Who do I see?
See the Student Advisors in the Faculty of Social Science Office.
Level IV Students
How many level IV classes can I take?
- Honours Sociology students: maximum of 12 units of Level IV courses
- Combined Honours students: a maximum of 6 units of Level IV courses
What happens if I take more Level IV Classes than I need for my degree?
You will not receive degree credit for these classes – neither as required or elective credits. Solar will not block registration in additional courses. It is your responsibility to ensure you have only registered in the courses that are required for your degree.
What is a directed Research Course? How do I set one up?
Directed Research Courses (4M03, 4N03, 4MM6) are optional courses allowing students to individually research a specific topic under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. Typically, a student draws up a reading list in collaboration with an instructor, and negotiates a research project involving the writing of a research paper. 4MM6 may involve original research. The instructor and student meet individually in the office of the instructor at different times throughout the course.
Students are responsible for making arrangements with a faculty member willing to supervise this course. It is advised that students approach faculty early (at least one term prior to the course).
For guidance as to research topics or faculty expertise, please visit the research areas webpageand review individual faculty web pages. (Note: Associate Members and Sessional Faculty are not eligible as instructors for directed research courses).
Once faculty approval has been obtained, contact the Sociology office (sociology@mcmaster.ca) with the name of the instructor, your name, student number and the course you wish to register in (4M03, 4N03, 4MM6). A waiver will be placed on Solar allowing you to register.
